Best cedar vs galvanized raised bed — an honest buyer's guide
Every spring the same debate flares up in garden forums: cedar or galvanized steel? Both make excellent raised beds, but they fail — and shine — in very different ways. After building and rebuilding beds across two climates (humid Zone 7 and dry Zone 5), here's the unromantic version of which one deserves your money, plus the soil math nobody tells you until your beds are already assembled and empty.
The short answer: it depends on your climate and timeline
If you want a bed that looks handsome, stays cooler in summer, and you're okay replacing in 7–12 years, buy cedar. If you want something you'll never rebuild, don't mind a modern look, and garden in a hot climate, buy galvanized steel — but pay attention to soil temperature.
Neither is a scam. The mistake most buyers make is choosing on price alone, then getting surprised by rot (cheap fir sold as "cedar") or scorched roots (thin steel in Phoenix).
Cedar: what you're actually paying for
Real western red cedar and eastern white cedar contain natural oils (thujaplicins) that resist rot and insects without any chemical treatment — which is why it's the go-to for organic growers who won't touch pressure-treated lumber.
The lifespan reality
A 1.5-inch-thick cedar board lasts roughly 10–15 years in dry climates and 7–10 in wet ones. The thin 5/8-inch cedar in budget kits? Expect 5–7 years before the bottom boards go soft. Thickness matters more than the "cedar" label.
Watch for the fir switcheroo
Many "cedar" kits under $80 are actually Chinese fir or hemlock. If the listing won't name the exact species, assume it isn't premium cedar and will rot faster.

Galvanized (zinc-coated) corrugated steel beds like Vego, Birdies, and Olle have taken over the market for good reason — a quality bed with an Aluzinc or thick galvanized coating can last 20+ years. The steel is food-safe; zinc is a plant micronutrient and leaching is negligible.
The heat caveat
Metal conducts heat. In cool climates this is a bonus — soil warms faster in spring, extending your season by a week or two. In desert or Deep South summers, edge soil can hit 100°F+, stressing shallow-rooted crops like lettuce and spinach planted near the walls. Fix: plant heat-lovers (tomatoes, peppers) at the edges and keep greens toward the center, or mulch heavily.
Coating quality is everything
Cheap steel beds rust at the seams within 3–4 years. Look for Aluzinc/Zn-Al-Mg coatings and at least 0.6mm gauge steel.
